1. You have to be a people person.

In Jaclyne's words: "PR is all about relationships. It's not just about who you know, but how well you connect with them." She shares a fun anecdote: "A friend once told me they knew they could leave me alone at a party, and by the time they returned, the whole party would know my name."

Pro Tip: Struggle with networking? Start small. Set a goal to have one meaningful conversation at your next event. Remember, quality over quantity!

2. It's not as glamorous as you think.

Jaclyne busts the PR myth: "Forget the image of PR pros sipping champagne at galas. We're often the ones making sure the champagne is served at the right temperature!"

She adds, "I've done everything from chasing down Green Tea and holding bags for talent to sweeping the ground with my bare hands for a step and repeat. Yes, my bare hands. When there's no broom, you improvise!"

Reality Check: PR is about problem-solving and being ready for anything. Pack a portable stain remover and a positive attitude in your event bag!

3. Be OK with making mistakes.

Jaclyne shares a nail-biting moment: "Early on, an editor at a highly-respected, top-tier newspaper almost canceled an exclusive because of a misunderstanding. At the time, it felt like I had made the biggest mistake of my career."

The lesson? "Mistakes are your greatest teachers. They're not career-enders; they're career-shapers."

Mantra to Remember: "In PR, we don't make mistakes. We have unexpected learning opportunities."

4. Have a curious mind.

Jaclyne's secret weapon? An insatiable appetite for knowledge. "I read 134 books in 2020," she reveals. "But it's not just about personal reading. I devour industry publications to stay on top of the latest PR campaigns and strategies."

Challenge: Can you beat Jaclyne's reading record? Start a PR book club with your colleagues!

5. Never assume the cookie-cutter approach.

Jaclyne's golden rule: "No two brands are the same, so why should their PR strategies be? Implementing a proven strategy is easy, but if you stop challenging yourself, you'll quickly become antiquated in your approach."

She emphasizes, "Invest the time to develop a plan that meets all their business goals, including aspects outside of PR. Our agency has been laser-focused on affiliate marketing for the past three years, and you'd be surprised how leveraging other departments can drive growth."
