đź’ˇThe Power of Pause - Making Strategic Stillness Work for You

Welcome to Edition 006! There's something almost poetic about how this holiday week forces our typically fast-paced industry to take a collective breath. While our phones might usually be buzzing with media inquiries and client requests, this week naturally invites us to slow down – and honestly? That's exactly what we need sometimes.

As communication pros, we're hardwired to always be "on," anticipating the next crisis, planning the next campaign, or crafting the next pitch. But today, we're going to explore how strategic pauses aren't just good for our wellbeing – they're essential for our professional excellence.

AFFIRMATION OF THE WEEK:
I trust that moments of pause enhance my clarity and strengthen my impact.

LESSON OF THE WEEK:
Stillness isn't about stopping – it's about creating space for clarity, creativity, and intentional action

THIS WEEK’S MOOD BOARD

đź“Š The Strategic Value of Pause

In our 24/7 news cycle and always-on digital world, the ability to pause strategically might be our most underrated PR skill. Let's talk about why those moments of intentional stillness could be your secret weapon for 2025.

Quality Over Speed

We've all seen it happen – a brand rushes to join a trending conversation or pushes out an announcement without proper vetting, only to spend the next week in damage control mode. While rapid response absolutely has its place (hello, crisis communications), the best PR pros know that timing isn't just about being first – it's about being right. Taking that strategic pause to assess, align, and thoughtfully craft your message often makes the difference between coverage that drives impact and coverage you wish you could take back.

The Reflection Advantage

Think of strategic pauses like your campaign's secret weapon. These intentional breaks in action aren't about procrastination – they're about perspective. When we build in deliberate reflection time, we start seeing patterns in media coverage that we might have missed in the daily rush. We identify emerging opportunities before they become obvious to everyone else. We catch the subtle shifts in audience response that could inform our next big campaign.

The beauty of reflection is that it transforms data into insights. Instead of just collecting coverage numbers, we start understanding the story behind them. Why did that pitch resonate more than others? What made that campaign generate such authentic engagement? These aren't just interesting questions – they're the foundation of your next strategic win.

Relationship Cultivation

Here's a truth we don't talk about enough: the quieter moments are often when we build our strongest media relationships. When we're not in the midst of pitching or managing a campaign, we have the space to engage authentically with our media contacts. This is your time to send those thoughtful, non-pitch emails to key contacts, to actually read and engage with journalists' recent work (yes, they notice when you do this), and to update your media lists with fresh insights about what different outlets are really looking for.

Think of it like tending a garden – the best time to nurture relationships isn't when you urgently need something to grow. It's in those quiet moments between campaigns when you can build the foundation for future coverage.

“A great idea can come from anyone regardless of your level or role”

I think there's this misconception that you don't "earn" your place at the table until you get to a certain point in your career - when it comes to collaborative spaces, like brainstorms and internal meetings where ideas are being shared, this can be anyone's opportunity to shine. There's a reason that you're in these rooms and part of these conversations. Feel empowered to speak up and have your voice heard - no matter the outcome, people will take note!

Don't forget that we're here to tell a story.

Success in our industry is no longer about churning out press releases, it’s about engaging with others to tell an effective story. At the end of the day, the media covers the news and if your brand doesn't have anything particularly newsworthy to talk about, you need to create by finding the angle.

You deserve your success.

You are in the room or at the table for a reason. You earned that promotion. I’ve spent so many years questioning why I was invited to a client pitch, conference, leadership meeting, etc. I keep reminding myself it’s because what I have to say matters.

Keep track of your wins.

Create an excel sheet of some type to keep track of your wins, even the small ones so that you can look back and see how much you've accomplished on the times that you are down or feeling unfulfilled creatively.

Lean into shared experiences.

For me, as an Asian American and LGBTQ person working in communications, bonding with people over shared experiences in the industry helped me navigate my own professional journey. What makes you unique can also be helpful in creating a network, finding mentorship, and even making lasting friendships.

Your reputation and relationships are everything.

PR, when done right, is incredibly rewarding but also incredibly taxing as you are only as good as the last hit(s) you’ve delivered to your client. Clients may come and go but the relationships you make with editors can last forever. Similarly, if something doesn’t work out with a client, don’t burn the bridge or take it personally. Their business may be going through a hard time and they may end up referring you to other companies down the line. Be respectful and kind in everything you do and all of your communication.

❤️ PR Pros We're Inspired By: Fabiana Meléndez Ruiz

There's building a PR career, and then there's crafting a path that transforms how brands tell their stories. Fabiana Meléndez Ruiz is doing the latter, proving that understanding different perspectives isn't just a skill – it's a superpower in communications.

The Journey: Growing up with her mother's wisdom "cada cabeza es un mundo" (everyone's head is their own world), Fabiana Meléndez Ruiz turned this early lesson in perspective-taking into a flourishing communications career. From building a marketing department from scratch at a civil engineering firm to launching Refuerzo Collaborative in 2023 (and landing two clients within five weeks!), Fabiana's path showcases what happens when strategic thinking meets authentic storytelling.

The Impact: As Founder & CEO of Refuerzo Collaborative, Fabiana has redefined what's possible in PR by securing coverage in Business Insider, Fast Company, Forbes, Inc., and Texas Monthly. But perhaps more impressively, she's built a reputation for taking on unique clients – from James Beard Award-winning restaurants to former forensic interrogators turned executive coaches. Her work at the civil engineering firm speaks volumes: generating over 190M impressions from ground zero.

Beyond the Headlines: While the coverage numbers are impressive, Fabiana's commitment to community and mentorship sets her apart. Her numerous accolades – including Reagan Communications' and PR Daily's Top Women in Communications Rising Star (30 and Under) and the Gene Barnwell Waugh Mentorship Award – reflect a professional who's not just climbing the ladder but extending a hand to help others up too.

In Her Words: "PR isn't just about telling stories – it's about understanding the unique world each client inhabits and helping them share that perspective authentically."

Do:

  • Schedule three 30-minute "strategic pause" sessions in your calendar for next week. Use these for reflection, not catching up on email! And yes, we mean actually block the time – your future self will thank you.

Taking our own advice on the power of pause – we're keeping this edition brief as we all prepare for the holiday week. Remember: In a world that's always rushing, your ability to pause strategically isn't just self-care – it's a competitive advantage.
